Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles were two appearances in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mother. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until after she had reached adulthood, as her parents were afraid of the negative effects that stress could be a cause of. Perry states that she did not want to perform in high school, but she decided to begin performing as a form of social interaction during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University moved into New York in search of TV roles. She landed small parts on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness led her to California to find theater work. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry starred in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on the ABC drama The Family. In 2017, Perry starred in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. That same year she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a youthful version. She was cast in the role in an audition that was open despite being a fan of this persona.
